Product overview
Food grade calcium sorbate, INS 203, is the calcium salt of sorbic acid used as a preservative or antimould ingredient in food categories where local regulations permit.
For procurement, “food grade” must be supported by a current source-specific specification, suitable manufacturing and quality documents, and a batch COA. Final use depends on the complete formulation, intended function and destination-market rules.
Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/98 removed calcium sorbate (E 203) from the EU lists of authorised food additives. An INS number or historical specification does not establish EU food-use permission. For other destinations, verify the current rules for the exact food category before requesting a supply proposal.
Read Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/98. Do not infer a worldwide prohibition or approval from this EU-specific restriction.
Procurement checklist
Use these qualification points when comparing a China supplier, manufacturer source, distributor offer, bulk quotation or sample.
Request E203 identity, assay basis, moisture or drying loss, contaminants, particle form and current food-grade documents.
Provide the exact food category, product pH, target organisms, process, dosage range and destination market.
Validate culture compatibility, pH, dispersion, sensory impact, legal use and shelf-life performance.
Compare solubility, cation contribution, availability, processing behavior and local regulatory status.
Application screening
Application selection depends on destination-market permission and finished-food trials.
For permitted fermented dairy or yogurt uses, assess culture compatibility, pH and preservative performance.
For permitted fruit-concentrate uses, including pineapple juice, assess dissolution, pH and preservative performance.
May be evaluated as part of a validated preservation program targeting yeasts and molds.
Powder compatibility, distribution, moisture control and dissolution should be tested before scale-up.

Buyer questions
Calcium Sorbate is used in suitable food processes for sorbate preservative and antimould ingredient functions. Legal use, dosage and performance must be confirmed for the exact food and destination market.
Calcium Sorbate is identified here by CAS 7492-55-9 and INS 203. Confirm the identity and supplied form on the current specification.
Request the current signed specification, agreed test methods, representative COA and a current batch COA. Resolve every missing unit, comparator or particle-size requirement before approval.
Confirm bag or drum, liner, net weight and pallets. Confirm food-contact liner, palletization, marks and container loading in the quotation.
Provide the food application, target standard and critical limits, quantity, packing, destination, certificates, Incoterm and requested delivery date.
